In most instances the psychologist will consult with parents in order to understand their child’s developmental and contextual history so that therapy can be appropriately targeted. Therapy with younger children usually involves working with parents, both to assist them to modify parenting and family factors and also to assist their child and encourage their child’s progress. Older children and adolescents are generally consulted independently and work together with the practitioner to develop therapeutic goals.
Young people benefit from having a “neutral” adult with whom they can feel confident discussing their worries in a confidential and safe space. Therapy assists young people move forward in a positive way with a range of skills, habits and techniques designed to assist them to accept change in an adaptive manner.
All psychologists are legally required to be registered with the national registration board, the Psychology Board of Australia, in the same way medical practitioners must be registered. This means that they must be competent and follow a strict Code of Conduct.

Medicare rebates
Often children are referred by General Practitioners or other health care specialists or others involved in their care and wellbeing.
Medicare rebates are available under the “Better Access to Mental Health Care” initiative, following referral by a GP or paediatrician.
